Phil Spencer Clarifies Avowed Delay Wasn’t About Game Quality Concerns

Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s gaming division, clarified that the delay of Avowed—Obsidian’s highly anticipated RPG—was not related to concerns over the game’s quality. Originally slated for release in 2024, Avowed has been rescheduled for February 18, 2025, for Xbox Series X/S and PC. Spencer explained in an interview that the decision to delay was more about strategic timing to avoid overlapping with other major releases, rather than any development issues on Obsidian’s side. The team at Obsidian continues to work on the game, and Spencer assured that more time was not needed for further polishing.
